Coppell versus McDermott!

Saturday 21 May 2022, Select Car Leasing Stadium

It’s really happening.

Twice before in our 150-year history, we have won promotion to the top tier – clinching the title on both occasion as Premier League football was invited to RG2.

And this summer, we’re bringing back some of the protagonists as those legendary promotion-winning teams come face to face for the first time to help us celebrate this club’s 150th anniversary.

What better way to bring our 150th anniversary celebrations to a close than to pit the two Premier League promotion-winning managers in our long history against each other…

It has been confirmed that in the dugout, Steve Coppell has agreed to take charge of his record-breaking 106-point winning side once more. And…just in case you weren’t aware…16 years on and we’ve STILL got the record! No team across all four divisions this season can exceed our astonishing total!

Standing in the other dugout…Brian McDermott is back to take charge of the side who stormed the second half of the season and sealed promotion in scintillating style before topping the table exactly ten years ago!

Over recent months, we’ve been contacting some of the main men from both sides – and those discussions have been led by former kit manager Ron Grant as part of his role with the Reading FC Former Players Association! And we have already had an invitation to play accepted by a good number of players from both promotion-winning teams and we’ll announce some of the stars who will be taking part over the course of the next couple of months…as we near the day of the big match!

Have they still got it? Can they still whip in a cross, pick out the top corner, fling themselves at the ball to keep a clean sheet? In truth, it doesn’t really matter! Whatever the result, this is sure to be a unique occasion in the history of our club and a chance for supporters, young and old, to celebrate some of the club’s former favourites.
